Lockdown Day 51 – Baking Pot Bread
Baking Time!
So, we are over the hurdle of 50 days in lockdown. We have all learned new skills in the process – like baking! Last week’s baking challenge required a fair amount of savvy with the amount of ingredients and the number of steps to complete the chocolate cake! This week, we are giving you a break on steps, without losing out on the fun or the flavour!
Let’s make…
* HEIDI’S FLOWERPOT BREAD *
YOU WILL NEED
- 8 terracotta flowerpots approximately 8 cm high and 9 cm wide at the top (bearing in mind the flowerpot will taper in towards the bottom). The nurseries are open again… so do a quick stop there on your way to the grocery store this morning!
- Spray and Cook
INGREDIENTS
For the bread:
1 kg of prepared dough from your local supermarket (let them do the hard work for a change!)
Optional:
- Grated cheese
- Raisins soaked in boiling water for about 5 minutes
- Cinnamon
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
1. Break the dough in half, then each half in half, and again, each of those pieces in half again. You should have 8 relatively equal balls of dough. (This is a good time to talk about fractions, whole, halves, quarters and eighths.)
2. Use the Spray and Cook to liberally coat the inside of each flowerpot. You can get the child to practice putting on her/his mask for this to avoid breathing in those fumes!
3. Pop one dough ball into each pot.
4. Place all the pots in the oven on the middle rack for about 45 minutes.
5. If necessary, turn the heat to the top element for another 3-5 minutes to brown the tops.
6. Remove from the oven and turn the bread out onto a cooling rack.
NOTE: Hold the flowerpot with a pot-holder or relatively thick dishcloth – IT WILL BE VERY HOT – ADULTS ONLY!
7. Wait for a while to allow the bread to cool a bit, and then enjoy with lots of butter, jam, cheese or your favourite topping!
For the optional ingredients:
- Flatten each ball, add about a tablespoon of grated cheese, and fold back into a ball.
or
- Flatten each ball, sprinkle liberally with cinnamon and speckle the raisins over the surface of the flattened dough. Fold into a ball again.
Bon Appetit!
