Lockdown Day 79 – Waffles
TREAT DAY!
It has been cold and wet in Cape Town thanks to a huge cold front that is now making itself felt across other parts of the country. We definitely all deserve a treat!
* WAFFLES! *
This week we will be making waffles. This is a good practice run for next Sunday (Father’s Day).
This recipe will make about 8 waffles in a waffle iron, but an ordinary frying pan can also be used.
YOU WILL NEED
- Three bowls – two medium and one small
- Wooden spoon
- Sieve
- Electric beater
- Egg separator (if you have one, otherwise do it the old-fashioned way between the two halves of the egg-shell!)
- Soup ladle
INGREDIENTS
- 1½ cups cake flour
- 15ml baking powder
- 15ml castor sugar
- 2 eggs separated
- 60ml sunflower oil
- 300 ml milk§
- Spray and Cook
Toppings of your choice: whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, maple syrup, banana, berries etc.
METHOD
By now you know the drill about getting the child involved in each of these processes!
1. Into the one medium bowl, invite the child to sift the flour, baking powder and castor sugar together. Mix well with the wooden spoon.
2. Separate the eggs. Yolks in the other medium bowl, whites into the small bowl. This may require adult help. An egg separator is useful here if you have one.
3. Ask the child to add the oil and milk to the bowl that has the yolks in it.
4. Guide the child to whisk the egg yolks, oil and milk with the electric beater.
5. Guide the child in slowly adding this mixture to the dry ingredients. Use the electric mixer to blend all together.
6. Remove and rinse the beaters thoroughly. It is important that they are clean and dry before whisking the egg whites.
7. Ask the child to whisk the eggs whites until they form soft peaks.
8. Show the child how to fold the egg white into the beaten mixture using the wooden spoon.
9. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let stand for 20 minutes.
Use this time to pack the dirty dishes into the dishwasher! You may also want to prepare the toppings and set the table for your treat feast!
10. Using a waffle iron or a frying pan, use the Spray and Cook to coat the surfaces. Use the soup ladle to scoop one ladleful of waffle mixture onto the waffle iron or pan and cook until lightly browned. If you are using a frying pan, you will have to flip the waffle during the cooking process.
11. Decorate the waffle and sit down to a feast!
Bon Appetit!!!!
